Happy Mother’s Day to Military Moms

Mother’s Day is the one special day of the year where we get to honor the special women Military Mom's Mothers Dayin our lives who hold the amazing title of Mom.  It’s a day where every son and daughter should thoughtfully and carefully do their best to love and appreciate this woman who has given so much for her children.  The role of a mother is a unique and special task that God has given to women, and I am constantly amazed by my wife and how she is growing in her role as a mother to our 1 year old and baby on the way.

For a Military Mom, Mother’s Day can often be bittersweet.  So often, these courageous mothers are at home, praying for the safety of their courageous sons and daughters while serving this great nation.  For as much as our soldiers serve and sacrifice for this country, their mothers do too.  By raising these men and women who grow to be soldiers and defenders of our freedom, these mothers are to be praised, loved and respected.

The realities of the dangers are troops are known no better by anyone but our mothers.  Their is a special bond between a mother and her child.  There is a protective covering over children that is unique to mothers.  Yes, fathers love and care for their children too, but a mother’s love comes in a special way –  A mother’s hug.  A mother’s embrace.  A mother who has kissed ‘owies’ and put on band-aids.  A mother who stays up all night and watches the fever break and sits in the emergency room.  Mothers have an amazing ability to love, to care, and to protect their children.

For all of the Military Moms out there, we want to say thank you for your love.  Thank you for raising children who would fight for this country and what it stands for.  Thank you for all of your sacrifices through the years.  We understand how difficult it is to be a mother of a soldier, and we just want to say thank you for your sacrifice.  We wish you a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Remembering What We Fight For

Yesterday, we posted an image on our Facebook page of an Army Father hugging his two daughters.  We captioned the image, “Thumbs up for remembering what we fight for.”

Army Dad and Daughters

When people casually talk about war, they can sometimes marginalize the sacrifices made in fighting for freedom.  Sure, people are entitled to their opinions.  But it’s important to remember that they are free to have those opinions because they live in a country where somebody before them fought for their freedom.  Let’s not forget.

Although, I will be honest, growing up in a free country when war is thousands of miles away, if you are not associated with a loved one in the military, it can be easy to forget why we fight.  But take those freedoms away for 1 day, and you’ll know immediately what we fight for.  Freedom matters.  Freedom to have a family.  Freedom to start a business.  Freedom to have ideas and thoughts.  Freedom to speak your mind.  Freedom to plant a garden.  Freedom to buy a car.  Freedom to play a game of catch with your son.

America is the most amazing country on this earth.  She stands for freedom.  I fear that this nation may lose site of that and take advantage of the freedoms given to them.  More and more, we seem to live in an entitlement state where people don’t appreciate earning what they work for.  This is a dangerous place to be in.  And although that may the way this nation is heading, we want to say thank you to those who fight for our freedoms.  Thank for laying down your life.  Thank you for fighting so that we may have freedom in this nation.

At MilitaryMilestones.com, we desire all men and women everywhere to be free.  Free from all kinds of slavery and oppression.  And we remember why we fight, and we believe in fighting for freedom.

Soldier’s Deck of Cards – Magician Tribute to Our Troops

If you haven’t seen this video yet, I think you will really enjoy it.  The magician, Justin Flom, retells an old soldier’s story about a deck of cards, using some neat magic with a deck of cards.  Be sure to watch the video all the way through as there is a stirring and touching moment at the end that honors our troops.

Here is a transcript of the video:

Hi, my name is Justin Flom.  Thank you for watching, and I’d like to share with you a story.  And, um, I certainly can’t take credit for the story.  In fact, it dates all the way back to 1778, and I heard it from a recording in the late 50′s.  And people are still passing around the story today.  So, you may know it, but it means a lot to me.

It starts with a soldier overseas at war in his bunker with a deck of cards spread out on his bed.  A sergeant walks in and says, “Soldier, what are you doing?”  And he says, “Sir, I was just about to spend some time in prayer with the Lord.”  He says, “Actually, it looks like you are about to play cards.”  He says, “No sir.  If you let me explain, I’ll show you something kind of interesting.  You see this deck of cards may seem ordinary to you, but it acts as my Bible.”

“You see, in a deck, the Ace reminds me that there is only one God.  And the two, is the two halves in the Bible, the New and the Old Testament.  The three – that’s the trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  The four, well that’s Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the apostles.  The six, that’s the six days in which God made the earth.  The seven, is the day that God rested.  In the Bible, you even have the ten commandments and my absolute favorite, Jesus, who is the king.  In fact, he’s the king of my heart.

Now, at this point the sergeant was surprised and impressed.  And he said, “That’s pretty neat.”  He goes, “it doesn’t stop there, sir.  You see, in a deck of cards, there’s four suits, hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds.  That’s the four seasons.  In fact, there’s thirteen cards in each suit.  There’s thirteen weeks exactly in each quarter.  Fifty two cards in the deck.  There’s 52 weeks in a year.  So, you see sir.  My deck of cards is my Bible.  It’s my calendar.  It’s my almanac.  And with a deck of cards spread in front of me, I can see all of the things that I am to be thankful for.”

Now, as a  magician, I work with a deck of cards for a living, and it’s a really nice story, it means a lot to me.  But I take it a step farther.  You see, with a deck of cards spread in front of me, I can remember the things that I am thankful for.  One of those things just may be a soldier who is oversees giving his life for my freedom.

We Will Never Forget – Remembering 9/11

Never Forget America 911 Poster

I am a forgetful man.  There are so many things in my life that have happened both good and bad that I seldom take time to reflect on.  That’s why I wanted to take time today to remember that horrible day when we were attacked on our soil.  No, it’s not an anniversary.  It’s just a time to remember, to never forget.

In today’s fast paced life, it’s easy to forget.  With politicians lobbying for political positioning, we often times forget why our brave men and women are overseas fighting for our freedom.  We were attacked.  Innocent men and women were killed.  Wives lost their husbands.  Children lost their parents.  Brothers lost their sisters.  It was tragic, and I don’t want to forget.

Today, I want to honor those who have fallen.  Today, I want to honor those who defend our freedoms.  It’s easy to hear today that America is not what it used to be, but I believe our best days are yet to come.  It’s the brave men and women who have served in the past and serve today that give me great pride in being an American.

To the men and women who have served and are serving this great country, thank you!  God bless you and God bless America.

Total Iraq War Casualty Statistics

At dawn on December 18, 2011, the last American soldiers pulled out of Iraq. That’s just 13 days short of the deadline officially set by the U.S. and Iraq government in an accord signed in 2008. The troops exited Iraq across the Kuwait border, shutting the border gates behind them. The final withdrawal follows a ceremony marking the official end to the war held in Baghdad on Thursday, December 15.

It’s impossible for simple statistics to show the true cost of the Iraq War. However, casualty data released by the U.S. Department of Defense begins to give us some picture, at least in terms of military fatalities. Below are tables showing casualty statistics by year and month, as well as a limited timeline of select events relevant to the war. The numbers include casualties from both Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND).

5 Reasons Why I Love My Grandpa, a WWII Veteran

Happy Veteran’s Day!  Today, it’s only appropriate that I take a moment to honor my grandpa.  We celebrated grandpa’s 90th birthday in early October.  Along with my dad turning 59.  I turned 30.  And my son, whom I named after my grandpa, turned 1.  Add it all up, and it takes three of us to equal one amazing grandpa.

WWII Veteran and Generations

A list of 5 is quite difficult when you respect a man like this.  So, here’s my best attempt at narrowing it down to the top reasons why I love him.

5.  He’s humble.  If you bring up his accomplishments, and they are many, he has a unique way of brushing them off like they were no big deal.  As a boy growing up in the depression, he had to raise himself.  Fend for himself to get food.  He was an incredible baseball player and was trying out in professional leagues when the war came.  He then became part of an elite group to fly the Bristol Beaufighter, a British night fighter plane, which only a few Americans flew.  You ask him stories, and he says it’s no big deal.  Yet, read the history, and it was clearly a big deal.

4. He loves my grandma.  They’ve been married for 68 years.  68 years!  His love for her throughout all of these years, while raising 3 kids has been steadfast.  He takes care of her like a man should take care of a woman.

3. He’s a war hero.  Make that, a humble war hero.  He doesn’t like to talk about it, but served very honorably in the war.  There were times when his plan was all shot up, and he landed the crippled bird, got out, and lived to fight another day.  9 years ago, my family went on a trip to Italy, and we revisited a few places he was stationed in the war.  It was amazing to hear those stories and try to understand what he and his generation went through.

2. He’s a hard ass (kind of).  Well, at least he tries to be.  Growing up, my brothers and I were scared to death of him.  He knew how to take care of boys.  That’s for sure.  Over the years, I’ve realized he’s actually the opposite.  He likes to act tough on the outside, but inside, he’s one of the biggest softies I know.  In fact, whenever his family is around now, he can’t go a few hours without being sentimental and crying.  But, he still tries to play it off like he’s tough.  I know better. ;)

1.  His faith.  Through 90 years of living, it is the faith of this man that has passed down to his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.  The legacy of faith that will be passed down to our family is in my opinion, his greatest accomplishment.  I have named my firstborn son, Emil, after him, and I only pray that he turns out to be as great of a man as his great grandpa.

To all the Veterans out there, Happy Veterans Day.  And to my grandpa, thank you, and I love you (and so does baby Emil!).

Grandpa and Grandson

(More info from my Dad and a pic from the war.)

I seemed to remember that dad (grandpa) told me that he flew out of there.  This pic is from the only house that he was able to occupy during the war.  He said it was at Catania.

Grandpa in Catania

Just to verify that his memory is still right on; here is a few excerpts.

The 415th was indeed at Catania.  During World War II it was seized by the Allies during the Sicilian Campaign and used by the United States Army Air Forces as a military airfield. Twelfth Air Force used the airport as a combat airfield, stationing the 340th Bombardment Group, which flew B-25 Mitchells from 27 Aug-19 Nov 1943.

Here is a couple of clips about the WWII mission:

During World War II, the 415th Night Fighter Squadron first flew combat patrols in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in 1943, then in 1944 and 1945 moved to France and later into Germany in the European Theater as a part of Twelfth Air Force. Returning to the United States after the war, it was assigned to Shaw Field, South Carolina.

An article of the summary about the WWII assault on Sicily: http://www.history.army.mil/brochures/72-16/72-16.htm

Excerpt of glider disaster that dad often has talked about:

The invasion plan called first for British and U.S. Airborne assaults, the former by glider and the latter by parachute. The British began their operation on the evening of July 9 when 147 tow planes, each pulling a loaded glider, took off from Tunisia. The aircraft, nearly all C-47s from the AAF’s Troop Carrier Command, carried the British I Airborne Division. Their mission focused on seizing a canal bridge south of the city of Syracuse on Sicily’s east coast. Regrettably, strong winds, flak, and poor visibility caused most tow pilots to release their gliders in the wrong areas. Only twelve came down in the landing zone; at least forty-seven gliders crashed into the sea, drowning many of the troops aboard. But the British managed to engage the enemy at the canal bridge and captured it the next day.

Interesting article about the WWII 415th squadron being honored by reincarnation  with modern stealth fighters: (At an airshow dad and I met a captain in the modern squadron and it was a real kick)   http://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/415th_Tactical_Fighter_Squadron

There,  now you have a little history to mull over.

America have to wake up

In order to acquire the presidency in America, candidates should stir up the religious fervor of the voters (gay wedding/civil union) and then vocally (and in some cases visually) wear your (new) Evangelical beliefs on your sleeve. It used to be candidate vs. candidate, then party vs. party, big business vs. the common (wo)man, platform vs. platform, after that region vs. region, but now not one of that matters as a new America has surfaced, an America in which the majority with a religious manifest regulations the minority with a luxurious agenda.

Religion has been the root of several issues and wars between nations and races throughout the course of history. Think of all the countries coping with power struggles between different religious groups like Iraq or Yugoslavia, think of the Holocaust and how millions of Jews were murdered during the time of Nazi Germany, the cause of the African genocide, and the bitterly fought battles between Ireland and England eight hundred years ago. And now, we’re noticing the same happening in America. We have been separated by our own beliefs and ideals, with religion gaining in the majority. Separation of state and church has never been more debated than it is today.  All too soon, people in minority groups would deal with the same situations and possible persecution minorities in the past have faced also. People would be converting left and right, not due to what they believe in the religion but because they want to be with the majority and they end up like those puppets of Bruce Schwartz, their actions being led by another. There would be missionaries going from one house to the next akin to sales people presenting their wares, claiming they’re on the righteous path and persuading you to join them.

The First Amendment of our Constitution is nothing a lot more than words printed on paper.  It’s through the actions of the people helping it that give it its powers. But with the country being as fragmented as it is in these times, can it still retain its support? Or will there be changes, tipping the balance into a right-wing governance? While there is no certainty yet, many fear that it would happen in this 21st century if we are to look at the main issues that produced the results of the 2004 presidential elections.

In the 2004 presidential election in which Republican George Bush won, 82 percent of voters said moral or even religious beliefs were their main concern. Compared to other concerns like education, terrorism, environment, the economy, and also the situation in Iraq, that’s a very high percentage. For the American people, it was their primary concern and the basis for their votes. With the country facing lots of important concerns, does religion being a basis for their vote actually make sense? However, we have to also consider these questions; should we not respect other people’s opinions and personal preferences? Should we become intolerant of others? Should we stop respecting and treating others the way we’d like ourselves to be treated by others? Should we put aside our ancestors’ insight of keeping the church and also the state separate, here in America, the so-called land of the free?

Ask yourself: Why do I need to swear on the Bible in court when the Ten Commandments can’t be displayed in a federal building? What will happen next? Only time, and the actions of our President, will tell.

Presidents: They’re not Perfect

More significant than proving perfection on your parties side, is a willingness to seek out the mistakes and correct them; to improve; to monitor your integrity. In the face of the opposition bashing away and looking for any symbol of weakness it’s tempting to deny any fault at all, however it’s still weak to ignore potential improvement. For a leader to encourage confidence, he should manage a balance between claimed effectiveness and a willingness to look at and adapt when modifications can make a real impact; Not because the opposition is demanding apologies for not adhering to their views, when their only reason is your destruction, and only when cause makes a powerful case.

Many people are those who are so fast to put the blame on the president however are blind to their own faults and also those who let their own party’s mistakes go unnoticed.

I have been reading David McCullough’s 1776. George Washington, in public, was a leader who inspired confidence and optimism while in private, because read in his correspondence as well as personal conversations, he was greatly concerned for the success of the Patriot Army. During New York City’s defense, Washington made some errors in judgment like selecting the wrong person to lead a post, dividing his army when the opposition was more powerful and also changing halfway through. All the modifications lead to confusion amongst the soldiers going into battle. He also failed to note the Long Island path that the British army utilized to surround the American troops.

Luckily for Washington he didn’t have a position battle press conference with journalists loyal to the enemy demanding he admit he was a failure. No, he had done his honest best and also he & his troops learned as well as grew better ultimately defeating Britain, that was considered the period’s military superpower. Though he made errors, he was still the perfect man available for the job. Though he did modestly tell congress he felt inadequate to the job, he put all into it’s success. The enemy made many errors as well, but in case Washington had been dismissed for his deficit of perfection, our history would be much different. Congress knew of his error’s but saw past them to his leadership and cleverness, instead of using every opportunity to enhance their political positions.

These days, politicians could stop at nothing to lay down their opponents, putting forth unverified facts and also disregarding the potential damage it would do to the nation. The media help them along by their exaggerations, setting back the country’s advancement.  More people are today seeing though the deceptions of those unthinking politicians. We could tell who’re those working for the good of the people and also those who are only making superficial noise, being self serving and also pampering to other politicians’ egos. In case only they realize how they have lost their dignity and credibility to the insightful and also perceptive public.

Show your patriotism and fly the American Flag.

One of the simplest ways to point out your patriotism is to fly American Flags. Most patriots, like those men you see wearing custom military rings, set up a residential flagpole. After all in the event you fly the flag day and night time it needs to be illuminated. The height will vary relying homeowners associations and your preference. The vast majority of the residential flagpoles are aluminum and are 15 to 20 foot tall. However, it’s not extraordinary seeing a fifty foot flagpole at a retired Navy home.  A 20 foot flagpole can fly up to a 4X6 US Flag plus another flag beneath it, (possibly the P.O.W. Flag or a state flag). There is no such thing as a law on windload capacities for residential flagpoles. Most will hold up very good in excessive winds, however you need to be sure to take the flag down. Aluminum flagpoles are comparatively sturdy but light. These kinds of flagpoles are produced using superior manufacturing processes. Aluminum flagpoles are pretty much maintenance free. Aluminum flagpoles are available in several totally different finishes. Common finishes for aluminum flagpoles are satin finish and anodized finish. Each finishes gives flag poles with a protecting coating that protects towards rust and weathering. The anodized finish is usually available in black, clear, darkish bronze, light bronze and medium bronze. The most recent developments in flagpoles are fiberglass. Fiberglass flagpoles can have a windload of up to one hundred eighty miles and hour… which a category 5 hurricane.  One other nice advantage to fiberglass flagpoles is that all these flagpoles don’t corrode or rust. Also, the fiberglass materials is a “non-conducting” material, which implies that fiberglass flagpoles don’t require grounding.  As you probably are conscious, aluminum flagpoles are large lightning rods. You’ll never have lightning issues with a fiberglass pole. This all means the installation of a fiberglass flagpole is quite simple. Fiberglass poles below 25’ might be put in with out bucket truck or ladder truck which can save you on installation costs.
If you want to show your patriotism, put up a aluminum or fiberglass flagpole and fly your flag with pride.

Thank You, Soldiers

How do you tell a loved one who serves in the military how much they mean to you?  How can you possibly thank them for the selfless sacrifices they make for you and for their country.  The truth is that no one really can.  What our brave men and women soldiers go through is enough to make anyone proud.  They spend months and years of their lives in vigorous training to be the best at what they do.  The United States military is a force to be reckoned with.  In a world of terror and violence, there are unsung heroes every day in the military who do not get the credit they deserve.  There are threats to our country that are squashed because of our brave men and women.  Those serving in the Army, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard & Navy are out there risking it all so that we can have the precious gift of freedom. us_casket

When you stop and think about it, it truly is amazing.  The sad part is that there are many in this great country who take for granted the freedoms that are given to them because of our military.  There are those who have the right to speak or protest because of what the military does for our freedom.  It’s a very thankless job.  And a good soldier knows it.  He is not looking for glory or accolades.  He serves because it is his duty.

Well, I just want to say thank you.  Thank you to all the brave men and women who fight for this country and lay down their lives for our protection.  Thank you to those who go where civilians would not dare.  Thank for being brave and thank you for being strong.

There are many ways to try to say thank you to your soldier.  You can tell them thank you.  You can write them cards, give them a hug, or send them an instant message or email.  You can buy them gifts.  Sure, there are all kinds of military gifts out there.  We personally think our military rings make great gifts, because they are a constant reminder of a way for you to say thank you to your soldier.  But probably the best thank you that you can give a soldier is to enjoy your freedom.  Live out life to the most, and don’t take for granted the sacrifices our brave men and women have made.
